Live Within Your Means

It's the holiday season and normally about this time I would receive a lovely bonus check from my employer. Well, I don't have an employer, unless you count Lucero, and she only pays out in poopie diapers and no one cashes that, so this Christmas is gonna be kinda lean. X is just getting started with his new position, to which he's making great coin, but we're trying to get our stuff together so that we can purchase ourselves a place to live, ya know so we no longer have to call our parents "roomie." Which I guess brings me to the point of this post:

Dear Friends and Family:

Please do not give me a gift for Christmas, 'cause I assure you I'm not getting you one. I know it's the giving season, but seriously, I think we'll all be ok if we don't exchange gifts this year. And it's not that I don't want to give you something and wrap it up in pretty paper with a shiny bow, but really, it just doesn't make sense right now. Suze Orman says to live within your means, which I'm very much trying to stick to, and I think you should do the same. Look, if I know you, and I think I do, you would be better off pocketing that money and applying it to something you need/want instead of trolling from store to store, scavaging for a gift for me. In fact, my gift to you is the freedom of not giving me a gift. I promise I won't cry come Christmas when I have no gifts to unwrap. I'm a big girl now. I think I can handle it. But I tell you what, I will cry if you give me a gift and I have nothing to give you, so please don't do it, no matter how small you think it is. Let's just give the gift of friendship and family. That's so much better anyway.

Sincerely,
~Beverly

Well said! Going into debt just so that you can buy something that a friend/family member *might* enjoy is sooo not worth it. I'm looking forward to the Christmas when we decide NOT to give actual gifts (as much as I LOVE receiving presents--it's my Love Language).

That is well said! Can I steal the "my gift to you is the freedom of not having to get me anything" part? :)
